Urgent Alert!  Petland Is Now Giving Away Animals!  Voice Your Outrage! PDF Print E-mail
A recent Petland advertisement displays just how much care and regard is placed on the lives of animals sold at their locations. VFA recently received a volunteer tip that the January/February addition of Pittsburgh's Coupon Clipper (the coupon and ad catalog that comes in your mailbox) included a page of Petland coupons: one offering a free parakeet with any $20 purchase!

Since the opening of Petland in East Liberty, a group of volunteers has been holding weekly protests outside of the location to oppose Petland's selling of dogs and cats. Despite all information provided and a constant opposition against the pet trade and its direct contribution to overpopulation, East Liberty Petland owners Eric and Marci Caplan not only continue to sell animals, but justify and defend their actions. "If they're going to stand there and say things, then they should at least come in and take a look and see the difference, which they've never done," said Mr. Caplan in a WTAE interview at a January Petland protest of his store.

Sadly, we don't need inside the doors to understand what is wrong with this advertisement or the selling of live animals for profit. The sheer audacity to send customers home with a free animal on a whim in hopes that another $20 is spent in their store displays a complete disregard for the well-being of an animal and the most basic necessities they would require, far exceeding a $20 price tag. Furthermore, Petland is encouraging customers to purchase a puppy by offering $100 store credit for doing so. "Bargain deals" such as these, promoting the sale of sentient life, can not possibly coincide with care and concern of any sort for the individuals being sold.

Please call in and send letters to Petland's East Liberty Store and tell owners Eric and Marci Caplan that you find this coupon outrageous and to halt the sale of live animals at their location:
