In this week's edition:
Canadian Fur Protest Review Saturday, December 13th was Voices For Animals' protest launch against fur-selling establishments in the Pittsburgh area. The afternoon welcomed a great t urnout with signs depicting common victims of the fur industry, as well as informational leaflets being handed out to a pleasantly receptive public in front of Canadian Fur Company. Thanks to one of our dedicated volunteers, we were also able to display informational video regarding fur products to passersby. (Thanks, Kevin!) We also were able to hand out over 200 leaflets during the course of the protest. It was a great success! Thanks to all who took time out of their busy holiday season to alert Canadian Fur Company and all fur-selling establishments in the Pittsburgh area that this sort of cruel and unnecessary industry is unacceptable. Stay tuned for the next scheduled protest!Protest Petland This Saturday! The local campaign against Petland in East Liberty has been going strong with protests held nearly every Saturday, and the group of dedicated volunteers leading the campaign are holding an important protest this Saturday, December 20th from 1-3 PM. As you know, Petland is one of the few chain pet stores left that still have the audacity to sell cats and dogs, despite mass public opposition to the practice. It isn't right for pet stores to sell any live animals, but dogs and cats are unique in their plight because nearly all dogs and cats sold in pet stores come from puppy and cat mills, which are well known for their abysmal and abusive conditions. Furthermore, the shelters are full of dogs and cats looking for a good home, and many of them die just waiting for someone to adopt them. No one should be buying or breeding animals when there are so many animals in shelters whose lives literally depend on finding a home. Petland and all pet stores that continue to sell live animals need to be held accountable for the part they play in the deaths of animals in shelters. Please come out on Saturday, show your support for the campaign against Petland, and let the public know that if they are thinking of adding a new four-legged member to their family for the holidays, adopting one from a shelter or rescue group is the only ethical and responsible way to do it. Posters and leaflets will be provided, but feel free to bring your own as well. For more information about the demonstration or to RSVP, please contact Shona at 412-241-7335 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . WHEN: Saturday, December 20th, 1-3 PM WHERE: Entrance to the Village of East Side Shopping Centre, 6401 Penn Ave. For more information about pet stores and the sale of live animals visit http://www.bornfreeusa.org/articles.php?p=481&more=1 City Vista Hearing: Mark Your Calendars! The public hearing date for the City Vista development project has been set for January 6th at 1:30 pm. If you can attend the hearing in support of local residents (who had attempted to get an evening hearing without success), please do so. We will be sending out more details the week before the hearing. Residents also passed on to us the following announcement: The ChickenHill Caucus is organizing a last ditch effort to have their voices heard for their Small Town America neighborhood by holding a voices rally this Friday, December 19th , 5pm at Ridgemont and Green Tree Road. Ridgemont residents are saying "Game On" to prepare themselves for a Public Hearing on January 6th at 1:30pm with Pittsburgh City Council. The residents will go against a Florida based developer, SouthStar Developers, who want to build 7 story high-rises in their neighborhood and re-zone 10 acres of trees Park District to RP. The neighbors have labeled this journey as "Small Town America VS New Urbanism." Residents will wear green at the rally to signify the importance of the environment, green space, and preserving zoning for Park Districts. Their main voice at the rally states, "Hear our pleas, "NO" to deforesting 10 acres of trees!" At their last rally, they dressed up as 7 story high-rises and painted "No" on the buildings to protest the monstrous buildings being built in their neighborhood across from single family dwellings. If you will like to attend this passionate "voices rally" for Ridgemont residents, please be at the specified location at 5pm. We look forward to seeing you there, if you attend we know that you (your media station) cared about our concerns and "voices" as Pittsburgh citizens. In the meantime, check out a "documentary" about City Vista presented by a (very!) young resident: |
