In this week's edition:
Giant Eagle Campaign Launch, Shrine Circus Protest Overview, and Pictures Before Shrine Circus arrived in Pittsburgh, Voices for Animals volunteers were hard at work planting the seeds of a campaign launch against Giant Eagle, an annual supporter of Shrine Circus animal cruelty through their “Family Fun Pack” promotional offer. Volunteers were present on 4 days throughout the week, at Giant Eagle locations in Shadyside and Squirrel Hill, to provide information to Giant Eagle customers about this issue. Please stay tuned for our next event in this campaign! Until then, you can continue to contact Giant Eagle to demand they cease their consistent promotions of circus animal cruelty. Please see our alert. Thank you to all who attended the Shrine Circus leafletings and the protest. Leaflets were circulated every day the circus was here and we had a great turnout for the main protest on Saturday night. Over 600 leaflets were distributed and many stopped to watch undercover circus footage on the faunavision the night of the protest. A volunteer also captured some disturbing video footage during the protest, so please stay tuned for its release! Check out pictures of the Shrine Circus Protest at our album. Esme Noel King Wildlife Sanctuary Thanks VFA Donors Voices for Animals was contacted in November of 2008 about Esme Noel, a wildlife sanctuary near Titusville, Pennsylvania, that needed assistance in fundraising to feed the animals seeking safety and food over the winter months. Alerts were sent and we are pleased to report that over $500 was raised for these efforts. The following is a thank you from David Prather, overseer of Esme Noel King Wildlife Sanctuary: Greetings Voices for Animals, We at the Esme Noel King Wildlife Sanctuary are writing to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your assistance in helping the many creatures make it through this winter. While parts of it have been very mild, other parts have been horrendous. This to and fro wobble of climatic conditions can be more devastating than consistent weather in any form. Without the help of some of your supporters we know many wild turkeys, deer and song birds would have perished. Thank you all who are behind the scenes making Voices for Animals make a difference! A local wildlife expert told us that the turkey flock would have perished without the loads of corn that we kept distributing to them. In case some of your readers are not familiar with wild turkeys, the males in particular have a beard which is made of hair like structures up to 12 inches long. When the worst of winter hit, I noticed that some of the turkey tracks looked as though the turkeys were dragging something very large. Only after serious observation and inquiry, did I discover that ice was forming on the bottom of some of the beards and with each step growing in size as it dragged in the snow. I learned that often wild turkeys perish because they have to go in search of food when there is none dragging this ice ball until it becomes so large that they cannot fly to their roosts and perish in the blizzards. Thank God and thank you that these birds never met such a fate. They roosted in the beautiful hemlocks in the Sanctuary and stayed very close to the feeding stations that we were able, thanks to your help to maintain. I have attached a photo taken this year of a tom turkey at the sanctuary strutting his stuff. Thank you again so much, David Prather VFA would like to extend our appreciation to all of its members who donated. Thanks for helping the animals! March of Dimes Kills Animals: Before You Walk…Know Where Your Money is Really Going It’s the time of year for March of Dimes’ annual fundraiser, Walk America, which is held to raise money for birth defect research. You may have seen the ads on TV and were considering signing up to walk yourself or you might be receiving memos from your company employers asking for you to participate in the event or make a donation. “Walk to Save Babies!” the appeals proclaim. What many people don’t realize however is that these donations the March of Dimes raises go to fund cruel and completely unnecessary experiments on animals. The March of Dimes spends up to $30 million of your donations annually on wasteful and unethical experiments on kittens, birds, lambs, monkeys, ferrets, mice, rats, and other animals. Some of these experiments include:
The March of Dimes needs to stop throwing donations away on funding these cruel and wasteful experiments on animals and put all their donation dollars towards funding human clinical research only, as many birth defect charities already do. If you would like to help babies, instead of supporting the March of Dimes, make a donation to one of these humane birth defect charities:
