In this week's edition:
Dan, We're Still Watching! This past year, Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato in many ways came to symbolize the "quick lethal fix" attitude to wildlife that seems to prevail at the moment state-wide, and which appalls so many people. VFA will be giving Mr. Onorato a small reminder this week that many of us are watching attentively to see how he handles the North Park geese issue in the coming year. We'll be asking for your support on that one (and you won't even have to leave your computer for it!) Look out for an alert later this week. North Huntingdon Canada Goose Hunt Update Activists were present to stand vigil outside the park during both hunts last week, as were township police and other officials. The park is next to a busy road and hundreds of people witnessed the vigil, including several busloads of school children. Most reactions were supportive of us. The township claims 18 geese were killed on Monday, which must have occurred immediately after the main flock took off since we could see the geese from about 20 seconds after take-off and saw no one fall despite rifle shots that continued until the birds were out of range. The main flock did not seem to have returned by Wednesday and only one lone goose was seen to be killed that day. The vigil will continue this week in the hope that the geese stay away a few more days.... Newspaper Articles - In addition to the Tribune Review and the three TV stations, the Norwin Star published an article on the North Huntingdon goose hunts: http://www.yournorwin.com/norwinstar/article/group-seeks-alternate-solution-geese-problem-park http://www.thomasmertoncenter.org/The_New_People/ (click on December 2007) http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07344/840471-53.stm (Send us your petitions back and we can do more, much more...) http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07348/841664-53.stm While collecting petition signatures yesterday, we came across a woman living near Riverview Park who is witnessing the same thing: antler-less deer carcasses left in the park to rot.... In other words, this seems to be happening in just about every City park. And it's not just the deer who are at risk here, it's you, your dog, your kids. So please back the Council people who are opposing this. Call or email your council members and complain about hunting within City limits. Report and document any incidents you witness. Attention Mount Lebanon Residents The following story was sent to us by one of our list members, who reports possible evidence of hearing poachers in Mt Lebanon last night. We're passing it on to alert all Mt Lebanon residents to keep your eyes and ears open, especially if you're up late at night: Write to Jailed Activists! While this is a celebratory time of year for most of us, many animal activists are spending this holiday period in jail, for the "crime" of risking their freedom trying to help animals (if you're stepping back at this point, thinking "uh oh, extremists", then please take a deep breath and read on anyway). None of these activists have hurt anyone, human or animal. Again, they simply attempted to put a stop to the most atrocious and torturous exploitation of animals for commercial ends. They are in jail for one reason: because they threatened the future of major business interests in the pharmaceutical, agricultural and financial worlds, for whom animals are nothing more than commodities. They include members of SHAC (Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty). The SHAC America websites are down at this time but you can find out more about the campaign at the UK site: http://www.shac.net and any of the support websites below that are functioning. The US SHAC activists are at the following establishments: Jacob Conroy #93501-011 Lauren Gazzola #93497-011 Joshua Harper #29429-086 Kevin Kjonaas #93502-011 Andy Stepanian #26399-050 By the way, VFA still has a couple of copies of the multi-award-winning documentary "Behind The Mask" for sale [www.uncagedfilms.com], so if you're looking for a stocking stuffer for an animal activist friend, let us know. The DVDs are $20 each.
